Hello, Spring! Welcome in the New Season With Spring Self-Care Tips

Blue sky with a few clouds, green grass, and "Hello Spring" with the Claybrook Consulting Logo

Spring is finally here! Luckily we've had some sunny days in Western New York, so it actually feels like it's happening, instead of just getting to the date on the calendar. I don’t know about you, but I always feel a little more optimistic and motivated this time of year.

When I started planning for this month, I noticed a theme around the things going on in March - self-care. With focuses on nutrition, sleep, cleaning, and happiness, Spring Self-Care will help move us into this season of new beginnings and past the dark and dreary winter. Oftentimes as leaders, we are so focused on everyone else and all the things that need to get done that we forget to take care of ourselves. So as we welcome this new season, let's practice these Spring self-care tips.

Spring Self-Care Tip 1: Eat Food That Makes You Feel Good

I have to admit, on that first super sunny and warmer day, I went to the store and bought a bunch of fruits and veggies so I could change up my lunches from soups to salads (one of my favs). March is national nutrition month and as someone who loves food, I see this as an important part of self-care. And I’m not talking about going on the d-word…I’m talking about feeding your body the foods that make you feel good, not the ones that make you feel sluggish. If you are looking to change up your eating habits, the Mediterranean way of eating has been ranked the healthiest way of eating for the seventh year in a row.

Spring Self-Care Tip 2: Sleep Well

National Sleep Awareness Week ironically takes place right after Daylight Savings Time. Getting a good night’s sleep is a vital form of self-care, since it plays a huge part in your physical and mental health. So, if you find yourself up in the middle of the night on a regular basis, try these proactive steps…according to the National Sleep Foundation, they can set you up for a good night’s sleep:

  • spend time in the sunlight (obviously use sunscreen)

  • exercise

  • avoid heavy meals, caffeine and alcohol before bed

  • follow a bedtime routine

  • avoid electronics an hour before bed

  • create a space to sleep in that is quiet, cool, and dark

Spring Self-Care Tip 3: Compassionate Self-Talk

Are you guilty of negative self-talk? Are you talking to yourself like you would your best friend, or your kid, or whoever you love most in this world? Words matter, not just what we say to others, but also to ourselves. Your words become your reality, so choose them wisely when you speak to yourself. Self-care starts with the words in our head - so be loving and compassionate to YOU!

Spring Self-Care Tip 4: Time for Spring Cleaning

Have you done your spring cleaning yet?? While cleaning is great for the obvious reasons (like removing germs and dirt), it can also be great for the soul and your health (it can actually release endorphins!). Living in a clean space can help reduce stress and anxiety and help you sleep better. And the act of cleaning can improve your mood, and help you focus. When I’m thinking about how to handle a challenge or opportunity, cleaning gives me the time and focus to sort through my thoughts. Ready for the benefits of cleaning, but don’t know where to start? The American Cleaning Institute has got you covered.

Spring Self-Care Tip 5: Spread Happiness

Spring and sunshine just naturally make me feel a little happier! International Day of Happiness on March 20 is just a nice reminder to try to create more happiness in the world - for yourself and for others. What self-care activity would you add to this list that brings happiness to your life?

Self-Care: Spring Addition

If we aren’t taking care of ourselves, it's harder to lead our team, to be a good example, and to stay focused on our goals. Self-care doesn’t just benefit you…it benefits the people around you when you can be your best self. So try out some of the above self-care tips and spend some time's Spring! 🌸
